Pre-school Eye Screening is a special service that the Juniors have come to be known for. What are we screening for? We screen for a condition known as amblyopia. Amblyopia (also called lazy eye) is a type of poor vision that happens in just one eye. It develops when there’s a breakdown in how the brain and the eye work together, and the brain can’t recognize the sight from one eye. Over time, the brain relies more and more on the other, stronger eye — while vision in the weaker eye gets worse.
Our pre-school eye screening coordinator schedule's appointments with local pre-schools to do a special screening known as a visual acuity examination: Testing using pictures or letters in children 3 years or older can help assess the child’s eye. Special visual charts are available for amblyopia screening.
This special service is important to our club. In fact, we have members that joined because we tested their child in pre-school and the referral turned up a positive result. We suggested their child visit an eye doctor for further testing (however, this is merely a suggestion and a personal decision that the parents may or may not choose and with this testing). Our suggestion led to treatment and that child was helped in the early stages when treatment is most helpful.
Depending on the pandemic, we hope to be able to begin this screening for the coming year (we will follow all safetly protocols based on the Los Angeles County Dept. of Health).

Corita Art Center is our newest featured philanthropy.
Art development: is important for children because it teaches them to be independent and think for themselves. it also teaches the gross motor and fine motor skills.
Improved Academic Performance: Studies show that there is a correlation between art and other achievement. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week through one full year) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate.
Inventiveness: When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. “The kind of people society needs to make it move forward are thinking, inventive people who seek new ways and improvements, not people who can only follow directions,” says Kohl. “Art is a way to encourage the process and the experience of thinking and making things better!”
Corita 101: Learning by Heart (At Home)
We've launched a new video series inspired by Corita and Jan Steward's seminal text "Learning by Heart: Teachings to Free the Creative Spirit". This first video introduces the main concepts from the book - looking, sources, structure, connect + create, work + play, and celebration. Over the next few months, we'll be sharing videos by artists around the world responding to these ideas in their own creative practice. https://www.corita.org/programs

Although Juniors are actively involved in fundraising and hands-on activities (we are currently using social distancing efforts to enhance our support for charitable service) with our philanthropies - we like to kick our shoes off and have fun! There are numerous social events throughout the year. We have an annual Holiday Social and other activities where we celebrate one another while providing much needed emotional support. Other social events that we have participated in have included; a yoga and brunch party, a Wine and Wigs party, Bunco, Lunch Bunch, Book Club, Hiking/Walks, a Chinese New Year's party, participated in the Fiesta Day Parade and lots more. Members become lifelong friends. We have former members who have been friends for over 50 years!
